In this workshop, participants utilize a new assets-based approach to address this challenge through an examination of the ten most important questions that educators should be asking their teachers, parents and students right now. Using role-playing to understand the diverse views of their stakeholders, leaders will acquire new tools to craft a more current and responsive vision for their school or district.

Creating and Leading School Culture: Innovation, Leadership, Communication

Participants in this highly collaborative workshop will review the true meanings of culture and innovation and share their own perspectives. Five essential skills required for all school leaders, regardless of their current roles, will be reviewed and analyzed. Participants will each complete an individual assessment of their own communication style and take part in role playing discussion scenarios dealing with common school challenges through a variety of communication approaches.

Building Teacher Capacity for Mobile Learning in Rural Communities

For the past 4 years, rural schools in Kentucky have partnered with the University of Kentucky College of Education to implement an innovative program where in-service and pre-service teachers coach each other on effective strategies for using mobile, wireless technologies within STEM education. This panel discussion will examine research findings from this program as well as lessons learned for K-12 and higher ed leaders about new professional learning practices that result in elevating the capacity of teachers for sustainable classroom innovation. Infusing Computational Thinking into Everyday Elementary Curriculum – Yes, You Can!

Using results from a new professional learning project in New York City schools, this workshop will introduce elementary teachers to proven strategies and tips for seamlessly integrating key computational thinking components (pattern recognition, decomposition, abstraction, algorithm design) within any English Language Arts, Math, Science or Social Studies lesson. With an emphasis on understanding the connections between CT concepts and everyday curriculum, participants will use a project tool to evaluate their own readiness for CT integration, experience unplugged learning activities that any teacher can use to introduce CT to young learners, and collaboratively design a new CT integrated digital learning activity in a core curricular area. Addressing the Leadership Disconnects on Cybersecurity

Leveraging new Speak Up research data on the state of K-12 cybersecurity, this no-spin zone panel discussion will dive deeply into issues that are preventing school districts from adequately protecting district data and infrastructure assets. #1 top issue: lack of a shared ownership and accountability across all levels of district leadership resulting in role-based disconnects on awareness, prevention, and remediation to reduce risk. The panel of Superintendents, CFOs and CTOs will share their respective views on cybersecurity and discuss why a National Call to Action is imperative to create a new shared vision and strategic approach to cybersecurity. Participants will be provided with a 10 point Call to Action checklist to use immediately in their district.
