Cutting into Drywall
out whether there are obstructions behind the spot you
have in mind. Bore a small hole, then bend a piece of stiff
wire and insert it in the hole. Rotate the wire in a circle.
If the wire hits anything, probe a few inches away.
Trace an outline
for the opening with the template supplied with the box or bracket or
trace around the box or bracket itself. Use a level to
be sure the opening is straight. Jab a utility knife through
the drywall and then use a keyhole
or drywall saw to saw around the outline. Test-fit
the box or bracket, but don't secure a box until you've
brought the cable to the opening.
